1. Speed, Time and Distance
Speed = (Distance/Time)
Time = (Distance/Speed)
Distance = (Speed x Time).
2. km per hr to m per sec conversion x km/hr = (x*5/18) m/sec.
3. m/sec to km/hr conversion x m/sec = (x *18/5) km/hr.
Exercise : Time and Distance MCQ Questions and Answers
Question 1
Two cars ' X ' and ' Y' starts from Delhi to Mumbai. How much time does X take to reach Mumbai ? I The speed of car X is 40% of the speed of' Y'. II ' Y' took 16 hours to reach Mumbai.
A. |
B. |
C. |
D. |
Correct Answer : C. If the question can be answered using both the statements together, but cant be answered using either statement alone.
Description :
Both the statements are required to answer the question.
suppose the distance between Delhi to Mumbai is D km and speed of Y is V kmh-1
∴ D/V = 16
From (I),
speed of X is X = 40/100 x V = 2V/5
So time taken = D/(2V/5) = D/1 x 5/2V
∴ 5/2 D/V = 5/2 x 16 = 40 hours.

Question 2
A train starts with a speed of 40 km/h with its speed increasing every hour by 10 km/h. In how many hours will it cover 185 km?
A. |
B. |
C. |
D. |
Correct Answer : D. 3 (1/2) h

Question 3
A is twice as fast as B and B is thrice as fast as C is. The journey covered by C in 54 min will be covered by B in :
A. |
B. |
C. |
D. |
Correct Answer : A. 18 min
Description :
Let C's speed = X kmph Then, B's speed = 3X kmph and A's speed = 6X kmph.
Ratio of the speed of A, B and C = 6X : 3X : X = 6 : 3 : 1
Ratio of time taken = 1/6 : 1/3 : 1 = 1 : 2 : 6
If C takes 6 min, then B takes 2 min
If C takes 54 min, then B takes (2/6) x 54 min. = 18 min.

Question 4
A man covered a distance of 12 km in 90 min by cycle. How much distance will he cover in 3h, if he rides the cycle at a uniform speed?
A. |
B. |
C. |
D. |
Correct Answer : C. 24 km
Description :
We know that. speed = Distance/Time
= 12/90 = (12×60)/90 = 8 km/h
Therefore, Distance covered in 3 h = Speed×Time = 8 × 3 = 24km

Question 5
A train 150 m long is running with a speed of 54 km per hour. In what time will it pass a telegraph post?
A. |
B. |
C. |
D. |
Correct Answer : D. 10 s
Description :
Step 1. Just change speed from km per hour to meter per second.
So 54 km / hour = 54*1000/(60*60)=54*5/18
=15 meter per second.
Step 2. Check train is passing through post or platform, bridge..
In this case, train is passing through telegraph post. So only train length is considered in passing through a telegraph post as length of telegraph post is negligible.
Step 3. Train length =150 meter
In one second, train cover 15 meter distance.
So in 10 second, it cover 150 meter distance and cross the telegraph post.
Answer 10 second.

Question 6
How many seconds does Puja take to cover a distance of 500 m, if she runs at a speed of 30 km/hr?

A man crosses a 1.5 Km long bridge in 5 minutes. What is his speed in Km/hr ?
A. |
B. |
C. |
D. |
Correct Answer : D. 18 Km/hr
Description :
speed in km/hr
=1.5/(1/12)
=18 km/hr
